The play starts with the death of Jemiah de Saint-Amour, a haitian immigrant, friend of doctor Juvenal Urbino, one of the characters in the story. The death of his friend gives Dr. Urbino a strong feeling that his death is nearing, like a premonition. He evokes it on the same day of his tragic end, remembering a day of his childhood when his father reminded him that reaching an age when he died, not even his kids were going to remember him. His wife, Fermina Daza, was his unconditional companion during some 50 years of a marriage transformed by the patience of sharing so many years together, since Fermina married Juvenal filled with doubt. After Dr. Urbino's death in a literary episode typical of Gabriel Garcia Marquez, comes across to the widow Florentino Ariza, a man in love with Fermina for 50 years, when he was young and she was just a girl that went to school. They start a relationship, strictly by writting, that is later interrupted by Fermina's father who discovers the romance in which his daughter's involved and he makes her take a long trip to forget her lover, to a relatives house in another town. But even then, and thanks to the telegraph, the youngsters remain in touch. After a couple of years, her father decides that is time for her return and is when Fermina, upon return and walking down the streets, finds Florentino; she discovers that he's not really the man idealized by her in his love letters for what she turns him down, meets Juvenal Urbino and marries him. Florentino Ariza, about to commit suicide, is sent by his mother to travel and on that trip he discovers his sexuality, that he was trying to keep untouched saving his virginity for Fermina; from that moment on he has affairs with countless and different women, without being able to forget Fermina. Time passes and surprises them elder. When Juvenal dies, Florentino shows up to Fermina's house to declare his unconditional love. A renewed and mature friendship surges between the two until Florentino invites Fermina on a boat trip, where they decide to spend the rest of their lives. |
